◆ステップス Steps プロフィール
米ジャズ／フュージョン・バンド。1979年にヴィブラフォン奏者のマイク・マイニエリがニューヨークで結成。
これまでマイニエリのほか、マイケル・ブレッカー(ts)、スティーヴ・ガッド(ds)、エディ・ゴメス(b)、ドン・グロルニック(p)、イリアーヌ・イリアス(p)、ピーター・アースキン(ds)、デニス・チェンバース(ds)、マーク・ジョンソン(b)らが名手が集い、振り幅の広い作風で人気を博す。
1stアルバムは渡辺香津美をゲストに向かえ、東京の「六本木ピットイン」で録音された2枚組ライブアルバム「スモーキン・インザ・ピット」をリリース。ここで展開されていた、新感覚のアコースティック・ジャズは、当時のジャズ・シーンに大きな衝撃を与えた。
日本でスタジオにも入り、オリジナル・ステップスとしては唯一のスタジオ録音盤『ステップ・バイ・ステップ』をレコーディング。その後ステップスは、ドラマーがピーター・アースキンに代わり、1981年9月にセヴンス・アヴェニュー・サウスでライヴ・アルバム『パラドックス』をレコーディング。この3作がステップスとしての発売であり、1983年ステップス・アヘッドとしてアメリカのレコード会社と契約して全米デビュー。
近年はライヴを中心に活動を展開。2016年にセルフ・カヴァー作『ステッピン・アウト』を発表。

This is a masterpiece by Steps, a group that dominated the fusion scene in the early 80's. Steps,
Steps, whose members include Michael Brecker and Steve Gadd, are all top-notch musicians from New York, performed at the Roppongi Pit Inn. Katsumi Watanabe joined 2-3 as a guest. The new generation of 4-beat jazz is unfolding.

◆Steps Profile
An American jazz/fusion band formed in New York in 1979 by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri.
In addition to Mainieri, the group has been popular for its wide-ranging style, with Michael Brecker (ts), Steve Gadd (ds), Eddie Gomez (b), Don Grolnick (p), Eliane Elias (p), Peter Erskine (ds), Dennis Chambers (ds), and Mark Johnson (b), all of whom are master musicians.
For their first album, they released "Smokin' in the Pit," a two-disc live album recorded at the Roppongi Pit Inn in Tokyo with Katsumi Watanabe as a guest. The new sense of acoustic jazz that was being developed here had a huge impact on the jazz scene at the time.
They also went into the studio in Japan and recorded "Step by Step", the only studio recording by the original Steps. The Steps then replaced Peter Erskine as drummer and recorded a live album, "Paradox," at Seventh Avenue South in September 1981. These three albums were released as Steps, and the group made its U.S. debut in 1983, signing with an American record company as Steps Ahead.
In recent years, he has focused on live performances, releasing a self-covering album, “Steppin' Out,” in 2016.
